Sherman Lollar

Sherman Lollar was considered one of the best catchers in the major leagues during the 1950’s. A 1941 graduate of Fayetteville High School, he had a career batting average of .264 with 155 home runs and 808 RBIs over 18 seasons.

In 1957, he received the first Rawlings Golden Glove Award for the catcher position in major league baseball. He eventually earned three such awards. He was named to nine All-Star games from 1950-1960.

Lollar signed as an 18-year old with the Baltimore Orioles which was then a minor league franchise. He made his major league debut in 1946 with the Cleveland Indians. He eventually played for the New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns and the Chicago White Sox.

In 1955, Lollar tied a major league record when he got hits twice in two different innings of the same game.

Lollar was the bullpen coach for the Baltimore Orioles and a coach for the Oakland Athletics. He manages Athletic’s minor league affiliates the Iowa Oaks and Tucson toros in the 1970s.
